About The
Cuckolds
Participation and Community Engagement
Dozens of local volunteers are already coming forward, offering their marine construction skills, building trades, engineering, painting, and other services. In addition, in just the first few months, generous and enthusiastic pro bono support from individuals and partner organizations has been forthcoming:
Jack Cogswell, owner of the Carousel Marina, hosted the community briefing in his new Carousel Yacht Club and donated refreshments for all.
Marty Moore, Coastal Designers, donated his services to prepare the construction drawings for this project, and to help calculate the costs for the restoration.
Elaine Jones, Burnt Island’s keeper secured the original drawings dating from 1891, and shared them with the Council. Tim Harrison, President of the American Lighthouse Foundation, presented the Council with a framed copy of the original drawings, signed by the architect.
Scott Larsen and the Newagen Seaside Inn have agreed to manage the hospitality side of the Lightstation—room reservations, catering, picnic outings, weddings, business retreats, and other events, and provide all the profits to the Cuckolds restoration.
Ben Russell has committed to have his company, Russell Industries, handle the manufacture and merchandising of Cuckolds products to help generate ongoing revenue for maintenance of the Cuckolds.
The U.S. Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team will continue to maintain the Fog Signal and Light itself, and arrange youth education programs on boat handling and marine safety.
Bigelow Laboratory has offered assistance, providing ocean science programs for visitors, akin to their shoreside Café Scientifique seminars open for free to the public.
Through the pro bono services of Steve Richardson and his environmental law firm Van Ness Feldman, the Cuckolds Council received guidance through the application process, and assistance securing the name and the image of the Cuckolds.
With donated help from Kiersten Pfiefer, Reingold, Inc. created the Cuckolds website to keep everyone apprised of progress, and provide a place for the public to contribute.
Rob Wheeler and the J. Edward Knight Insurance Agency are providing insurance coverage at no cost to the Cuckolds.
While everyone is encouraged to paint, photograph, and draw the Cuckolds Light as it is now, and during the reconstruction process, Robert Mitchell has been named “Official Photographer” for the Cuckolds.
Maureen Heffernan, President of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens has expressed delight with the opportunity to participate, and in a letter of support, said she loves the idea of starting a small garden appropriate to the Cuckolds, adding botanical interest to the project.
Some 32 Inns, B&Bs, and Hotels, and merchants in our community are participating in a program to provide their guests and customers with an opportunity to give to the restoration and to help Burnt Island’s programs as well.
Skip Rideout and Gerry Gamage have rebuilt the slip ways providing safe access to the island.
Jeremy D’Entremont has generously provided personal photos taken of the lighthouse as well as devoted a page, within his own website, to the Cuckolds Lighthouse. His site can be found at: www.lighthouse.cc/cuckolds.
