HOW CAN I HELP

Volunteer

Your community needs your help and welcomes your ideas. Somewhat deteriorated and partially demolished, the Cuckolds Fog Signal and Light Station stands sentinel at the entrance to Boothbay Harbor. We all have a big job ahead to rebuild the keepers’ quarters, boathouse, and tool shed. Thus, we welcome your participation, and ask for your volunteer leadership and “roll-up-your-sleeves” help in several critical areas:

Resource Development

Yes, we will need volunteers and financial contributions to accomplish all that we envision. We are organizing now to ensure that each island and each community throughout the region has an organizing Chair who can help us get the word out and get the resources in.

Materials Contributions

We need to acquire every nail and timber, every steel beam and iron railing, every shingle, brick, and length of pipe.

Supportive Relationships

We are engaging hotels, B&Bs, inns, tour boats, and others to help spread the word and invite broad community interest, involvement, and investment.

Public Information

We are pledged to provide information displays and kiosks that provide historically correct information and education.

Merchandising and Marketing. Our community now owns the rights to the Cuckolds name and image, and we will need professional assistance to take advantage of this asset.

Infrastructure Development. All the things you don’t see that make an island Lighthouse work—fresh water, waste disposal, power—are also necessary.

Construction

We will need volunteers skilled in all aspects of construction—masonry, iron work, carpentry, roofing, project management, scheduling, and much more.

Transportation

We’ll need work boats and barges to transport building materials out and back, and once the Lighthouse is restored, we’ll look for an historic boat or reproduction to carry visitors to and from.

Historical Information and Artifacts

We’ve acquired the original architectural drawings and site plans, but have only scratched the surface. We seek information about former Lighthouse keepers and their families. Period furnishings, tools, and artifacts. Old photos. Great paintings and drawings of the Cuckolds. Let us know what you have. We can take care of your artifacts and display them for others to see.

Landscaping

We need experts who know how to landscape and garden on serious rock ledges.
