Light Station Acquired in 2006 is a Work in Progress: Soundings Magazine

Rising from one of two granite ledges known as the Cuckolds, the historic fog signal and light station--the first transferred under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000--has stood sentry over the approaches to Boothbay Harbor, Maine, in some fashion for 119 years.   Now, a band of volunteers and some paid contractors are re-building and restoring it.

Power to the Cuckolds

Two cables that carried electric power from Southport Island to the Cuckolds lighthouse, once thought removed, were located by a deep sea diver.  The cables are in surprisingly good condition and there are hopes that they can be re-connected.

Receipt of a generous contribution from Bill and Kate Horgan of Little Hunting Island will make it possible to begin rebuilding the shipways on the Cuckolds Island.  To further spur rescue efforts, Rick Dickenson, artist and owner of a gallery in Boothbay Harbor, donated an original oil painting of the light as it looks today.
