Rescue Plan

In order to accommodate the Council’s fundraising, seasonal construction limitations, and availability of volunteers, the Council’s restoration and rehabilitation plan has been divided into five phases:

Phase I:     Establish Restoration Program and Restoration Planning
Phase II:   Boathouse Restoration and Infrastructure Rebuilding
Phase III: Exterior Keepers Quarters Restoration and Facilities Activation
Phase IV: Interior Keepers Quarters Restoration and Facilities Activation
Phase V:   Open Facility, Launch Programs and Interpretive Education

Projected Opening:  31 May 2013

Phase I:  Establish Restoration Program and Perform Restoration Planning (2007-2009)

  • Establish the rescue organization
  • Attract partners
  • Develop logistics plans
  • Develop facility sustainment plans and constructs
  • Prepare rehabilitation drawings, preservations/rehabilitation and construction schedule, determine materials requirements
  • Initial site protection and Cuckolds Light and Island Stabilization Plan

Phase II:  Boathouse Restoration & Infrastructure Rebuilding (2010)

  • Finalize construction plans and secure permits
  • Stabilize, repair, and repaint the existing conical Cuckolds Light structure
  • Rebuild boat house, exterior to be historically correct 31'6" x 15'4"
  • Replace/repair nautical ways and access ramps
  • Initiate plans and process to re-establish water, waste system, and power
  • Perform Western Cuckolds Cleanup and site preparation for day visitors and camping

Phase III:  Exterior Keepers Quarters Restoration and Facilities Activation (2011)

  • Rebuild Keeper's dwelling (exterior only for 2011):  exterior to be historically correct according to original drawings dated 1891, modified in 1907
  • Replace windows and doors in remaining brick structure
  • Activate water, waste and power systems
  • Continue maintenance of existing conical Cuckolds Light structure

Phase IV:  Interior Keepers Quarters Restoration and Facilities Activation (2012)

  • Complete interior of Keeper's Quarters dwelling to include:
    • Historic period decor and contemporary amenities
    • Meeting rooms and museum space
    • Two sleeping suites
    • Kitchen/dining area to accommodate up to 16 people
    • Caretaker's suite
    • Public toilets and shower rooms
    • Install instructional materials, museum pieces, tools, navigational equipment, supplies
  • Landscaping and walkways
  • Launch new "Cuckolds Launch" and rehabilitate moorings
  • Install First aid equipment and water safety equipment (life rings, life jackets, VHF, etc.)
  • Continue maintenance of existing conical Cuckolds Light structure

Phase V:  Open Facility, Launch Programs and Interpretive Education (2013)
